A Little Slice of Pie

The magical world of pie! So many pies and so little time. Wait? There is more than just Apple Pie?  Of course!

However, this is not what this post is about; in regards to our health and weight loss, pie is our enemy.  But pie can teach us something important in getting towards our weight loss goal.

A Delicious Coincidence?

To all those that are math nerds, when you hear Pie or Pi this is what you think:

3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749445923078164062862089986280348253421170679 (the first 100 digits of pi).

3.14 is a percentage, a fraction or piece of the whole. It is used to figure out the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. We can take this “coincidence” of pi being flipped to spell the word Pie to our advantage.  How you ask? Easily, by breaking up our regime or weight loss goal into more manageable parts.  Like a slice of Pie.

Just as the numbers of PI have no end so can our health and weight loss.  As we continue to eat right, work out, and get all around healthy, our numbers are constantly changing.  Just as PI does not have repetition in its numbers, so does our weight loss; after some time our goals hit a plateau, it is at this point that we must change up our routine to continue the journey.  Therefore, our weight loss journey is constantly changing.  After we reach our goal, now it is time to maintain, which means we change how we work out and what we eat to keep us at our goal.  Our habits and goals are always changing just like the never ending numbers of PI.

As many of you who read this blog know, I have been trying to get down to my goal weight for a number of years.  As of this past Monday, I weighed 294 lbs again, I have been fighting staying below 300 lbs for most of this year. Why?  Too much pie in my life, too much unhealthy and fattening things in my eating habits.

As Steve Kamb of Nerdfitness.com fame has written “You Can’t Outrun Your Fork.”  And that is the truth, you can work out all you want and if you still eat like crap you are never going to reach those goals.  And for too long have I given into my fork and remained where I am today, still overweight and no where closer to my physical goals.

However, something happened last week that gave me new perspective and resolve to reach my goals.  Taking the pie and cutting it up into slices.

Divide and Conquer

Have you ever seen anyone who has sat and consumed a whole pie in one sitting?  I know I haven’t.

As we cut up a pie into more manageable pieces to eat, so should we with our weight loss.  I good friend mentioned a while back about dividing up her weight loss to make it easier to get down to her goal weight. Internally I scoffed at the idea, thinking that that wasn’t an ideal idea for myself.

However, as I have begun spending more time dividing up my goals, passions, and ideas into bits to work towards one part and then take the next step towards another, I reevaluated my disdain at hacking up my weight loss.  For the longest time I have looked at the whole pie, the whole image and stuck my fork into it and taken a bite at a time and wondering why I have never achieved my goals.

It’s because I was going after the whole pie at once.

Now I have taken my weight loss and cut it up; instead of thinking that I want to get to my goal in a year and never evaluating how to do so, I have divided up the pie.  I now look at it from the math portion 3.14, or in this case 3.75, the amount of pounds I am gearing towards losing every week.

Small Bites, not Big Bites

Instead of taking the whole pie one bite at a time, I have cut out a slice and am going to devour that one bite at a time.  3.75 lbs a week is the goal.  This decision has also changed my focus, if I want to lose the 3.75 pounds this week what actions do I have to take to get there?  It has changed how I look at my food.  Is this meal hurting or helping my weight loss, do I really want those peanut m&ms after lunch, or a small cone from Chick-fil-a? The answer now is no, because those items are not beneficial to my weight loss.

3.75 lbs a week is totally doable instead of trying to do the whole thing at once and then getting discouraged because I have never gotten there.  Right now I am looking forward to this October for my brothers wedding and my overall goal is to lose 50 lbs by the wedding; by focusing on this small bite at a time I know I can surely get achieve this goal and ultimately reach my final goal of 185 lbs by my 30th birthday in February.

Munching like Pac-Man

You have picked back up working out and getting healthy just in time for that summer trip, working towards that sexy summer body.  Yet there is something holding you back and you can’t seem to figure out what that could possibly be. Answer= You are eating like Pac-Man.

You are being inhibited by your own desire to eat.  This can mean one of three things:

  • You are Hungry
  • Your emotional state is triggering your “need” to eat
  • You have a mental issue that is connected to eating

Firstly, if you think that you are hungry, try drinking a glass of water to start and wait five minutes to see if that solves the issue.  If after five minutes, you still find yourself hungry or even itching for something sweet, go for an apple.  Not only are you satisfying that desire to eat but you are getting something healthy into your system and scratching that sweet tooth with natural sugars. Also think, “When was the last time I ate?”  If it has been between 6-8 hours since your last meal, you should probably eat, unless you are doing intermittent fasting. (Nerd Fitness FTW)

Secondly, when you find yourself hungry and water hasn’t solved the issue and you really want to pull a chair into the pantry and consume everything in there; stop and evaluate that desire.

Thirdly, it could be a mental issue.  It could be a deep seated mental state that has caused eating to be associated with a traumatic experience in your past.  This isn’t something that can be easily shaken off or stabbed.  Unfortunately, this is something that requires professional help through a counselor, therapist or the like.

Granted there could be several other reasons for your desire to be an all consuming Pac-Man, however I am going to focus on the emotional state in this post.

This is something that is my issue, wanting to plop down in the pantry and munch away on everything in arms reach.  Now being 6 foot tall, that is everything.  As you are eating, look behind you and see what is chasing you, those proverbial ghosts that could be following you.  Fear, anger, depression, dissatisfaction etc.  You may have to eat that power up and chase those ghosts down and eat them in return.

You could be wrestling with a Sandworm and maybe need to do something to shake it off.  Stop and think about what you are feeling or experiencing that is triggering the desire to eat and eat.  It could be as easy as being bored or feeling lonely.  Once you recognize the worm following you, do something about it.  Don’t resort to grabbing that chair and opening that box of cereal and munching away.  Call a friend to go have coffee or go for a walk.  Do that workout you have been putting off all day, fold those clothes in the laundry basket, clean the living room or office etc.  Do something to overcome that emotion that is telling you to eat.

Most, if not all of the time it is boredom and loneliness that are my triggers to stuff my face and mainly it is late at night.  I need to constantly remind myself that when I am feeling this way to go to bed, not to keep watching boring late night tv that is prolonging my boredom; but to bite that bullet and shuffle off to dreamland.

This constant state of evaluating my desire to eat and then taking action is a process, not something that will happen magically overnight.  Although we all wish it could, sadly life doesn’t work in that fashion.

Pacman

Forward Ho!!!

There are plenty of books, speakers, websites and a plethora of information out there on how to live your life to the fullest and pursue your dreams.  I know cause I read a lot on the topic and I have written quite a bit about the subject.

With the help of inspiring bloggers and world changers like Steve Kamb at Nerdfitness and Chris Guillebeau at Art of Nonconformity, along with the amazing speaker and entrepreneur Dani Johnson, they all have influenced me so much recently.  Steve for getting my health and weight on track (which I have lost about 14 lbs in 13 weeks!). Chris for rekindling the desire to pursue that which burns within my heart to do and then Dani for giving me the drive to get my life and finances under control and get back on track. All three together have been influential in making the effort to change, grow and push forward. And very recently T. Harv Eker for helping me change my Financial and Mental Blueprint.  Four people that I would love to meet! *hint hint haha*

I have been truly blessed by their work and businesses, igniting the spark in me to reclaim those dreams which I had set down or seemingly lost.  What dreams do you have that you have given up on or forgotten? As I have read recently from multiple sources, that it doesn’t matter your parents, your upbringing, your financial situation, age, gender, race etc to succeed or push for your dreams.  The only thing that is stopping you is you!  You can go from homeless, in debt and pregnant and make millions of dollars or drop out of high school and eventually get a masters degree.

Your circumstances don’t matter, it is when you allow your circumstances to be bigger than your dreams that matters.  When you give up on everything you wanted to do because those bills weight more than your desire to travel, purchase a home, start a family, start a business, volunteer in a non-profit, that is the problem.  Here is the thing, if you have had enough and that little flame inside that contains that desire to make a change just won’t quit then crack the shell and let the passion consume you.  Let that desire for change override your fear and doubts and do what it takes to succeed.

Start today, don’t want till tomorrow!  Right now make one small change and effort to step forward in the direction of your dreams. Maybe it’s to start a blog, send out a manuscript, post your creative skills on Etsy, backpack the world or to relocate and start afresh.  Whatever it may be, pursue it with all your heart and you will find that the doors will open for the opportunity to be grasped by the horns and rode to success.

Don’t let fear, doubt, money or anything stop you from climbing to the top of your road to success.  Take life by the horns and force it to wear the saddle of your dreams.  Make it submit to the cry of your heart, the recurring dreams of the night and the daydreams when you are lost in thought.  As Mr. Guillebeau has said (paraphrased) “Don’t give up cause we are all rooting for you to succeed! ” And I mean it, I want to succeed and I want, above all else, to see you live the passion of your heart.  So today, pick them back up, dust them off, shake off the dust of your past and put one foot in front of the other and walk out that door into the fullness of your dreams.

Just think, the thing(s) you may be yearning to do or create, there may be no one else in the world with the same desire!  How can we all experience the greatness locked inside of you if you are too afraid to let it out and do what you were created to do? As Queen Elsa so popularly has stated, “Let it Go!”  So take that key, undo the chains and lock and set those dreams, passions and desires free!  Do it!  Now!

Go out and feel the burn of your dreams today nerds!

Dig Dug DIG!!

How many of you remember this game?  I do!  The goal of the game was to eliminate underground-dwelling monsters by either inflating them with an air pump until they explode, or by dropping rocks on them and each level you got more monsters and the level of difficulty increased.

Mega Miner is another digging game where you are a drill and you go around digging for minerals, you only have a limited amount of fuel and temperature resistance as you dig deeper.  You sell the resources to then level up your drill to be able to dig deeper and go farther.  MEGA MINER (click the link to play).

What point do these games have?

I am relating them to this point; we have to keep digging to reach our goals.  With both games, if you stay on the surface you will never find the valuable resources buried within or complete the game.  As with Dig Dug, eventually the monsters will come after you and kill you; if you don’t go after them first and bicycle pump them till they explode or drop rocks on them.  In life, we cannot be complacent, to do so means death. We always have to be pushing towards the vision and goals we have for ourselves.

There are times in our lives that in order for us to dig deeper we have to come back to the surface, refuel and level up. (great post from Nerd Fitness). Towards the surface are the cheapest of resources and you can collect a few of these before you need to go sell them and make your first purchase upgrade.

You cannot just dig straight down and attempt to accomplish anything, you will overheat and run out of fuel and there you will be stranded and game over. We have moments like this in life, you think, “if I just keep going and push myself I will reach my goal”. This can be good and bad.  However, in life that doesn’t work so well.  You push yourself to the point of overheating and you will end up burned out and useless.  We need to push ourselves most of the way, stop and evaluate our reserves and make sure we have enough to get back to a place of rest, refuel and upgrade.

How do  I go about upgrading?

We have to upgrade if we have any hope of reaching the resources of the most value.  This means adding 5 lbs a week to your weightlifting routine or reading a book about something you have wanted to do for some time.  Go to that seminar you have been putting off.  Pick up that phone and call that girl/guy you can’t stop thinking about.  Find ways to upgrade your life.  Take a class on writing so you can finally write that amazing story you keep daydreaming about.  Don’t sit there and let your monsters aka Fears to come up and stop you from succeeding.

Bicycle pump them in the face!

Life isn’t going to stop and let you jump on the train, you have to run and grab the handle to jump on. Like in Divergent! (great series if you haven’t read it yet). Don’t put off tomorrow that which you can do today.  If you have no idea what to upgrade or where to go, then take a step back and evaluate what are your aspirations.  6 months, 1 year, or 5 years from now, who is the person you want to see in the mirror?  Start there and then decide what to upgrade first.  Create an epic quest list and pick one or two to focus on first to level up/upgrade and once you have tackled those, then pick two more and soon enough you will be on your way to Level 50 and creating the life you have constantly dreamt about.

Hulk Smash

Go ahead and get mad, get really angry at your circumstances, I give you permission.  Get angry at your weight, get angry at your eating habits, get angry at your jealous girlfriend (kidding I wouldn’t recommend that!)  However I do recommend being Bruce Banner at your life!  Go ahead and Hulk Out today!

I say that because that is what I have chosen to do as of today, get angry at my weight, eating habits and lifestyle (habits, time spent, finances etc). I have had enough of looking at others around me who embody what I want to look like and I am getting angry at myself, above all, to go forth and conquer!  Starting today I am aiming my  gamma infused fists at areas of my life that need HULK SMASH.   But I need your help!

For the next 30 days I am going Hulk angry at my eating habits, for starters, and doing intermittent fasting (what is it?). Along with that one meal I do eat, which i am planning on being lunch only, I am eating salads.  The kind and type doesn’t matter, making a smallish change by eating a salad that is variably healthy, not overloaded in crap.  Secondly, I am budgeting myself to certain amounts I am allowing myself to spend every week and only using cash.  When the cash runs out then that is it until my next paycheck.  *working as server and here soon always having cash on hand will cause me to reevaluate this at a later date.* The leftover money from every paycheck will be divided up into my savings and paying off debt.

Third, I have some other habits that are going to be the hardest to overcome.  Habits I will not disclose here but ones nonetheless that I need to eliminate from my life in order to continue with the process of leveling up.  Those are going to take the biggest effort and most of my Hulk Rage to destroy, but totally do-able! And the victory that will come with it will be most warranted!

There are times that we don’t want to make the tough choices or work hard to see a desired result.  Most of the time it is easier to give up and shrug our shoulders and move on.  However, with this great quote it changes things (in my opinion): “A person’s health can be measured by the number of uncomfortable decisions he or she is willing to make.” -Steve Kamb of NerdFitness.( <- take a couple minutes and read the article that inspired this post!)

If you think about the Hulk, most of the time He had no choice if he changed into the Hulk or not.  One little thing could set him off and all of a sudden you had a rampaging, green, rage machine on your hands.  Let us begin to behave the same way towards those things in our lives that we have finally had enough of!  However, from the list of things I have read recently, start off small, getting raging angry (new phrase?) at one thing and when that one thing is destroyed, then do the same at another and another.  Until one day down the road, maybe months later, you can look back and breath a breath of fresh air because the number of things you need to get raging angry at are minuscule from what they were!

Friendly Crowd Control

Today’s post is focused all around this quote:

You are only going to be as good as the people you surround yourself with.  So be brave enough to let go of those who keep weighing you down.

I recently had lunch with a friend who is really more of a brother than anything else.  He was talking about some stress he was going through and I brought up the quote above (not verbatim but close enough).  I basically told him that he needs to surround himself with people that are going to support him and push him towards success.  Gather around himself people that will lift him up when down, support his decisions (whether they agree or not, which is very difficult for most people) and even help him out where needed.

I told him that no matter what he has to be himself and not let others (even those that were close friends) bring him down.  He can be no other person but himself, because everybody else is already taken!  It is also, from the books I have been reading, something that I need to do.  There may come a point in our lives that we need to reevaluate those we hang out with and decide if they are worth keeping around. Don’t worry, none of you are currently at risk of being eliminated 😉.

When you have to start compromising yourself and your morals for the people around you, it's probably time to change the people around you.

If you want to be depressed all the time then hang out with depressed and negative people.  If you want to be broke and unsuccessful then hang out with broke and passionless individuals.  If you want to succeed and see your dreams become a reality, then become involved with people who are doing just that.  You are who you surround yourself with!  Plain and simple.  So begin to think about all those that you hang out with the most and analyze how your life has changed, for better or worse and make the conscious decision to either remain friends or choose to spend less time around them.  There may even be those that you need to cut ties with altogether, trust me, you will feel so much lighter when those that do nothing but bring you down are sent out to Lian Yu never to return!  We don’t need to hoard “friends” to feel good because sometimes there are those that just stink up the place and need to leave.

Then again there are those that we need to keep even closer because their very presence is uplifting and clears away that fog of depression.  These are the kinds of friends we need to collect, along with those that push us to dig deep for our goals and dreams.  I am thankful and lucky that I have these people in my life who will push me and are very understanding.  If you are lacking this caliber of individuals then look for community groups that will push you are places like the Nerd Fitness Rebellion. And post there to get acquire the kings of people that you need to keep you going and who will support your goals and changes in your life!

This is a short and quick post but well worth it, I hope that it encouraged you today or gave you the insight and realization of maybe some things you can change with those you hang out with.

Droids? What Droids?!

Our biggest setback when getting into shape or progressing forward with our dreams is Mindset.  We tell ourselves that just one more cookie and then we will stop, I can sleep another half-hour and then I will get up to work out etc.  We all have said these things to ourselves whether in relation to doing homework, working out, eating or whatever, we are our own worst motivators.  With a snap of our fingers we can convince ourselves to eat that bag of oreos or watch another episode on Netflix and before we know it the bag is empty or 5 hours have gone by and we are ready for the next season.

I am extremely guilty of this, I confess, I did it just this morning.  Instead of getting up at 7:30 like I originally planned, I slept till I had to get up to take a shower before my schedule for the day started.  However, to make up for it I worked out after lunch, when I came home from my meeting. Today doing my circuit was easier than on monday, I even pushed myself a little farther.  I skipped Wednesday because of the excuse that I didn’t want to and actually I was still extremely sore from Monday.  But it is amazing how you feel after a good workout, I actually laid there on the floor for a few and grinned because I pushed myself a bit farther than Monday.  That “buzz” you get, (aka adrenaline) from exercising is way better than from food, drugs, cigarettes etc plus you are getting yourself healthier and more fit every time you do it.

I would consider that a Win-Win situation!  Wouldn’t you?

Our Mindset, or Willpower or motivation is all a mental process.  Instead of saying “I can’t” or “Maybe Later,” just get up and DO IT NOW! Get it over with, so to speak, and just go through your workout circuit.  I mean it, put the laptop down, or the smartphone, step away from the computer and go do your workout, NOW!  Then when you are done you can come back and finish reading this!

We play mind games with ourselves so often that we have stopped ourselves before we even thought of getting started.  For me, I have started telling myself that “I don’t eat sweets.”  Or even “I don’t eat cheese.”  You don’t realize how much effort that takes off the mental game when you already tell yourself that you don’t, instead of I can’t because that leaves a weak spot in your armor for you to take the offer later on in the day to consume copious amounts of that substance.  Now don’t use the phrase to not workout, that is just a defeatist mentality and if you really want to see the YOU buried under that excess weight then we cannot think that way.  When it comes to exercising, forgo saying “I can’t” instead say “I don’t skip a workout session.”  See the difference from “I don’t exercise,” to “I don’t skip workouts.”?  Already you have given yourself a bit of a mental umph to go do that circuit or routine and “level up your life.” (as Steve Kamb would say.)

Put your game face on and get out of bed or drop that remote and go for a walk, run up and down the stairs a few times, whatever.  Just tell your mind to shut up, that if you want to achieve your goals, dreams, desires and passions then the mental chess match has to stop and you need to get off your lazy bum and push yourself to succeed.  There is also a spiritual side to the mental battle we fight “cause our battle is not with flesh and blood,” but that is not a topic for here.  If you would like my input on the spiritual mental game then leave me a comment and I will write one on my other blog 😉.  Each day push yourself a little bit more and soon enough you won’t have to fight to do it because you will enjoy how you feel, the way you look and the euphoria afterwards and things will be that much easier.
