All About the Reboot

Do any of you remember this show from the 90’s?

I loved this show as a kid, I now need to waste a day and rewatch this show.  The adventures inside of a computer as programs worked to mend and defend the city aka “mainframe”  from Megabyte and Hexadecimal, two viruses bent on infecting the world.

The concept of Reboot can become applicable to our own lives. The “mainframe” is our lives, we are Guardian Bob with an array of quirky sprites to assist us and we have viruses like Megabyte and Hexadecimal to thwart our desires and goals. That is the place I am at right now. It is time to reboot again, to start over on the journey to weight loss central.  To fend off the viruses of despair and lack of motivation, to change out my weapons to better combat my enemies.

Occasionally we all need to do a reboot of our lives, or even just certain areas of our lives. When we do though, the good news is that we get to keep all the EXP learned and just have to reapply our points as we start again on a different leg of the journey.  We retain all that we learned, what worked and what didn’t, and where we failed.  Then we can take all this information and use it to try again.

Equip Yourself

I know there are many times in RPGs that I will stop in a town or safe zone and assess my equipment.  I will take stock of what I have, equip better equipment or improve my current equipment before continuing the journey.  We can read dozens of success stories and become so inspired to go about things the way they did and then get even more discouraged when their success doesn’t translate to our success.

However, what they did may not exactly work for you or me.  We have to find the equipment, the regime, or appropriate lifestyle changes that will work for us individually.  Just like in an RPG party you can’t have all Warriors; you need the Mages, Healers, Ranged, and Tanks to create a balanced and effective party.  In the very same vein, the same strategy of weight loss, eating right etc isn’t going to work for every person.

We have to tailor the weight loss to each of us individually, find what you like to do physically and do that, and then when that is easy find ways to level it up to increase the difficulty.  Experiment with different lifestyle changes for food to find the one that works for you.

If you struggle with losing weight and you have tried different diets, then maybe a good option to try is a food allergy test. See maybe what foods are you eating that you are actually allergic to that are prohibiting you from losing weight.  I know for my own mother that is what really kicked her weight loss and health to a new gear when she found out what all she was actually allergic to and yet still consuming.  It is amazing how much better you feel as a whole when you are no longer putting things into your body that are essentially poison to you.

So today, decide if it is time to reboot, restart, or respawn your life or just a certain area of your life.  I know I have had several things happen that brought about this thought to reboot my life.  This post worked out great to begin a series of post next week.  I will talk about that more in next weeks post.

Don’t forget to comment, subscribe, and check out my other blog as well.  Go out and change up Nerds!

Dig Dug DIG!!

How many of you remember this game?  I do!  The goal of the game was to eliminate underground-dwelling monsters by either inflating them with an air pump until they explode, or by dropping rocks on them and each level you got more monsters and the level of difficulty increased.

Mega Miner is another digging game where you are a drill and you go around digging for minerals, you only have a limited amount of fuel and temperature resistance as you dig deeper.  You sell the resources to then level up your drill to be able to dig deeper and go farther.  MEGA MINER (click the link to play).

What point do these games have?

I am relating them to this point; we have to keep digging to reach our goals.  With both games, if you stay on the surface you will never find the valuable resources buried within or complete the game.  As with Dig Dug, eventually the monsters will come after you and kill you; if you don’t go after them first and bicycle pump them till they explode or drop rocks on them.  In life, we cannot be complacent, to do so means death. We always have to be pushing towards the vision and goals we have for ourselves.

There are times in our lives that in order for us to dig deeper we have to come back to the surface, refuel and level up. (great post from Nerd Fitness). Towards the surface are the cheapest of resources and you can collect a few of these before you need to go sell them and make your first purchase upgrade.

You cannot just dig straight down and attempt to accomplish anything, you will overheat and run out of fuel and there you will be stranded and game over. We have moments like this in life, you think, “if I just keep going and push myself I will reach my goal”. This can be good and bad.  However, in life that doesn’t work so well.  You push yourself to the point of overheating and you will end up burned out and useless.  We need to push ourselves most of the way, stop and evaluate our reserves and make sure we have enough to get back to a place of rest, refuel and upgrade.

How do  I go about upgrading?

We have to upgrade if we have any hope of reaching the resources of the most value.  This means adding 5 lbs a week to your weightlifting routine or reading a book about something you have wanted to do for some time.  Go to that seminar you have been putting off.  Pick up that phone and call that girl/guy you can’t stop thinking about.  Find ways to upgrade your life.  Take a class on writing so you can finally write that amazing story you keep daydreaming about.  Don’t sit there and let your monsters aka Fears to come up and stop you from succeeding.

Bicycle pump them in the face!

Life isn’t going to stop and let you jump on the train, you have to run and grab the handle to jump on. Like in Divergent! (great series if you haven’t read it yet). Don’t put off tomorrow that which you can do today.  If you have no idea what to upgrade or where to go, then take a step back and evaluate what are your aspirations.  6 months, 1 year, or 5 years from now, who is the person you want to see in the mirror?  Start there and then decide what to upgrade first.  Create an epic quest list and pick one or two to focus on first to level up/upgrade and once you have tackled those, then pick two more and soon enough you will be on your way to Level 50 and creating the life you have constantly dreamt about.

Go out and upgrade your life today Nerds and Nerdettes, I would love to hear what you want to upgrade or tackle first. Leave a comment!

The Bigger Picture

3 Weeks! What has happened in the past three weeks?  A lot that is for sure.  I lost my job a week and a half ago, went from affordable income to zero, lost 5 lbs in weight, a friend is moving back to NY and I began to question my direction in life again.  One thing that is still a constant in my life is no dateable prospects, there is some good news!

Don’t be alarmed, I am not questioning my decision and direction with AMTC, I am confident and firm in that direction.  I know that the situation of how I became fired is shrouded in mystery and unexplained with reasons that I may never receive.  However, one thing I do know is that I shall not give up on the dream and desires upon my heart.  Speaking of which I recently updated my Epic Quest of Epic-ness!  Check it out, I am on my way to Level 4 in life! YAY!

Anywho, I am sitting at Starbucks attempting to find jobs and I cannot seem to focus on the elusive search.   So I sit and stare out of the windows and watch the world stroll on by, aka people watching.  You can thank my Grandmother and Mother for my adept roll at people watching and being super observant.  I am thinking about life, the books I recently read, my current track in life and what I am going to write about.  Then it hits me, an image comes to my mind.

Not exactly this specific image, but you get the point.

Building a Puzzle!  Different thoughts and revelation came fumbling together.  My life has been full of attempts, trials, success and a great pile of failures. (Irrelevant note: type in pile of failures under google images and you get failed architecture and collapsed buildings.)

Our lives are like building a puzzle, the first opening of that box and we look at all those little interconnecting pieces and go “Good Lord how am I going to put this all together?”  We dump the box out and at least for me, you begin looking for the edge pieces to start forming the base work of the puzzle.  During this process of sorting through hundreds, if not thousands of pieces, you find like tiles, stick them together and put them off to the side.

Soon enough you have most of the frame of the puzzle assembled and an assortment of meaningless united tiles that have a piece of the complete image with no clue how it fits into the jigsaw.  Slowly but surely and bit by bit you begin to amass the jigsaw puzzle together like the image on the box and you can see what it is suppose to resemble.

How does this fit into my life?

Brilliant question.  It came to me like this; the base work of the puzzle is us, who we are, our identity, hopes, dreams, passions and desires.  Contained within this wall, that is a interconnected work of atoms (the jigsaw frame), you find an image that must be put together (the rest of the loose pieces). During our lives we try things, attempt new ideas, projects, business possibilities etc.  We have successes and failures, wisdom and knowledge to apply to future attempts.

Those are the pieces that we complete in little groups scattered outside the puzzle groundwork.  Piece by piece we find the bits that connect to the architecture of our dreams and carefully put the image together.  Then revelation hits and we find where a collection of 5-6 pieces fits into the bigger picture and another and another.  All those successes and failures have practical application for our future and in ascertaining our dreams.  Sooner or later we step back and see that that puzzle, that in the beginning was a myriad of pieces and edges, has now come together to form a finished and clear image.

This is a huge revelation for me because I was thinking about where am I going to go next, what am I going to do?  Now I need to sort through those groupings dispersed around my puzzle and find where they fit into the frame.  I have dozens of combinations laying on the outside, i need to begin putting them together and see what skills and wisdom I have learned from my 28 years of experience and apply myself towards my dreams.

I encourage you today Nerds and Nerdettes, don’t become discouraged at your failures, attempts and lack of direction.  Take a step back and begin to analyze where all those clusters of pieces belong and then decide which direction to take from there.  There are times that we stare at a certain piece for so long and our vision gets hazy because we forget that there are oodles of other pieces to put together.  If one doesn’t fit, put the piece down and move on, there will come a time, down the road, that that piece will come back into place and find it’s place perfectly.

I would love to hear your comments, suggestions etc.  Go out and assemble your jigsaw puzzle today nerds!

Igor, flip the switch!!

Young Frankenstein, a great movie and an instant classic.

“Roll, roll, roll in ze hay!!”  “Put ze candle back!”

Sorry I could quote the movie all day, but that won’t complete this post or even make it effective.  What does young frankenstein have to do with this post…nothing! I decided on the title while pondering what I was going to write today.  And that is triggers and switches that get us going or cause us to fail.  My biggest trigger for failure is food and/or comparing myself to others. Not to mention that it is REALLY easy for me to give up and not care. But I am praying and hoping that after today things are/will be permanently different.  I was reading today’s email from my favorite entrepreneur Dani Johnson about 9/11 (12 years ago today) and how when things get bad that they could always get worse.  And I thought about 9/11 and then my mind flashed to the movie Red Dawn where North Korea invades the west coast and that inner voice asked “What would you do if the enemy invaded America?”

Wow, what?!  What would I truly do?  In my  current state I would easily be killed.  I would be captured and put into a pen with the rest of us who didn’t follow rule #1 of Zombieland “Cardio!”  Kidding, but that would mostly be the reason for my failure; lack of dedication, pour health and no physical skills.  And finally, my lovely state of Colorado decided to descend into fall temperatures and rain and I think, finally, hopefully, that switch, that trigger was flicked.  I need to change who I am, I know I have said this DOZENS of times, but if our country were really to be invaded by North Korea or some other enemy country would I be able to survive?  If we transcended into a post-apocalyptic world would i live past a week?  And the true answer, by myself is “Haha Sucker!” If I got together with adventurous, outdoorsy people it would be longer, but not enough.  So something has got to change and that has to be with the skills I have, or lack thereof.

It didn’t help that in my church I am one of four people capable of dancing in our production of Fiddler on the Roof which means I get to do the Russian Dance. (take a couple minutes and see for yourself what I have to learn to do) And in my current physical strength and weight most of this dance and the other dances are going to be physically impossible for me.  So that was another switch that went off, that I have to change, I have no choice, that i have to be able to perform the dances for the show and not to mention I am a perfectionist haha!

It was one of my goals to become proficient at archery this year, and when my ‘sister’ comes home from South Korea we are planning on taking archery lessons.  And then I can put the skills of Alec Lightwood in Archery (minus the gay part no offense anyone) into my bag and move onto knife skills, sword skills, gun lessons and as I get to my goal weight, Parkour (SO AMAZING!!).   Maybe I should just become a Shadowhunter Assassin?! Either way it is time to become a person who is capable of surviving if we were invaded or our country were to collapse.  And I need to remind myself, continually, that it is going to be a day by day thing and no matter how much I wish, hope and pray that it is never going to be instanteous results.  I am going to have to work hard at it and daily and diligently!  And eventually I will become that Parkour, bow & arrow wielding, Shadowhunter Assassin!

Ask yourself this question, if we were to be invaded by North Korea and had to fight for survival, would you survive? I would love to hear your comments and thoughts on this question!

Go out and feel the Burn today Nerds and Nerdettes and get working towards your RPG Class!

Droids? What Droids?!

Our biggest setback when getting into shape or progressing forward with our dreams is Mindset.  We tell ourselves that just one more cookie and then we will stop, I can sleep another half-hour and then I will get up to work out etc.  We all have said these things to ourselves whether in relation to doing homework, working out, eating or whatever, we are our own worst motivators.  With a snap of our fingers we can convince ourselves to eat that bag of oreos or watch another episode on Netflix and before we know it the bag is empty or 5 hours have gone by and we are ready for the next season.

I am extremely guilty of this, I confess, I did it just this morning.  Instead of getting up at 7:30 like I originally planned, I slept till I had to get up to take a shower before my schedule for the day started.  However, to make up for it I worked out after lunch, when I came home from my meeting. Today doing my circuit was easier than on monday, I even pushed myself a little farther.  I skipped Wednesday because of the excuse that I didn’t want to and actually I was still extremely sore from Monday.  But it is amazing how you feel after a good workout, I actually laid there on the floor for a few and grinned because I pushed myself a bit farther than Monday.  That “buzz” you get, (aka adrenaline) from exercising is way better than from food, drugs, cigarettes etc plus you are getting yourself healthier and more fit every time you do it.

I would consider that a Win-Win situation!  Wouldn’t you?

Our Mindset, or Willpower or motivation is all a mental process.  Instead of saying “I can’t” or “Maybe Later,” just get up and DO IT NOW! Get it over with, so to speak, and just go through your workout circuit.  I mean it, put the laptop down, or the smartphone, step away from the computer and go do your workout, NOW!  Then when you are done you can come back and finish reading this!

We play mind games with ourselves so often that we have stopped ourselves before we even thought of getting started.  For me, I have started telling myself that “I don’t eat sweets.”  Or even “I don’t eat cheese.”  You don’t realize how much effort that takes off the mental game when you already tell yourself that you don’t, instead of I can’t because that leaves a weak spot in your armor for you to take the offer later on in the day to consume copious amounts of that substance.  Now don’t use the phrase to not workout, that is just a defeatist mentality and if you really want to see the YOU buried under that excess weight then we cannot think that way.  When it comes to exercising, forgo saying “I can’t” instead say “I don’t skip a workout session.”  See the difference from “I don’t exercise,” to “I don’t skip workouts.”?  Already you have given yourself a bit of a mental umph to go do that circuit or routine and “level up your life.” (as Steve Kamb would say.)

Put your game face on and get out of bed or drop that remote and go for a walk, run up and down the stairs a few times, whatever.  Just tell your mind to shut up, that if you want to achieve your goals, dreams, desires and passions then the mental chess match has to stop and you need to get off your lazy bum and push yourself to succeed.  There is also a spiritual side to the mental battle we fight “cause our battle is not with flesh and blood,” but that is not a topic for here.  If you would like my input on the spiritual mental game then leave me a comment and I will write one on my other blog 😉.  Each day push yourself a little bit more and soon enough you won’t have to fight to do it because you will enjoy how you feel, the way you look and the euphoria afterwards and things will be that much easier.

So Go out and Feel the Burn today Nerds 🙂  My thighs are killing me!

The Weakest Link

Real quick before you continue, take 5 minutes and read this article by Darren Hardy.  It is a quick read but well worth the time.

I never really have attacked my weaknesses, the things I suck at I usually just leave them alone and move onto something else.   I mean who honestly wants to spend time getting better at the things that are our weaknesses, wouldn’t it be better to just try and forget about them and continue to do the things we are good at? Take a minute (or two) and think about your weaknesses, what things in your life are your Achilles heel?

A few of mine:
Fear of Confrontation
Afraid to talk to people outside of work. aka working my business
Lack of Confidence.  Here is a great article from NerdFitness on the topic
Fear of Rejection
Foregoing the Unhealthy things
Sticking to my Goals

Those are just a few that come to mind, most of them are mental and emotional issues.  Last year we took 8 youth to camp in Texas and after we came back i made the decision to stop drinking soda/pop, it has been 10 months and I haven’t had any soda (expect for when we played suicide pong for youth group one night).  But there are certain things in my life that I have the hardest time to conquer/overcome.

Although victory isn’t just overnight, some of the greatest military campaigns lasted years and they didn’t have immediate triumph. They had to continue to work and push against the opposition in order to have their dreams come true.  Success isn’t given, sure you have the rare percentage that seem to accumulate success and have a life of privilege and esteem.  In reality though, the majority of people have to work hard to achieve their goals, dreams, passions and desires.  To attain victory and success over our weaknesses and in every area of our lives we cannot remain complacent or stay in a mediocre mindset.  We have to attack those weaknesses with diligence to see that Berlin Wall come tumbling down.

We need to work at those weaknesses, after all the Grand Canyon wasn’t formed overnight  (or was it?).  Attack those problem areas bit by bit and over time we will see a difference and begin to see change.  Then soon enough those problems will be the past and we can attack the next weakness on our list.  If we never chip away at those weaknesses then there are some things in our lives that we will never accomplish. This is the truth!  You want to make it on the Varsity team, then you need to ask those on the team what they did to get there and begin to attack those things that you lack to get you on the team.  Suck at remembering tasks, then find a few different memorization techniques to improve your memory etc.

We have the ability and capacity within in each of us to become the people we see ourselves being.  As any warrior will tell you, that in order to get across the battlefield, you are going to have to take out the enemy and hack and slash your way through the opposition.  That is the way war happens and the way it is in our everyday lives.  There are some things that will be easy to attack and defeat, others may take months or years.  However, with diligence, patience and perseverance you will have the reward of Victory.  And how sweet that day will be when you can look at that weakness and laugh, because you know that you have triumphed over it and it isn’t holding you back any longer.  Begin today to attack at least one weakness and start to gain back or gain ground over that and push towards the finish line!

Go and Feel The Burn today Nerds 🙂
