Minimalism Part 1: Health

As I stated in my last blog, I am going to do my first post series. Recently I finished a great book by Joshua Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus called Minimalism: Living a meaningful life. Over the next few weeks I am going to take each week and implement a different chapter from the book.  This first week, I am going to talk about Health.

I will make a promise to you that over the next week I will stick to the things I am going to say here and then next friday I will write the next post and give a update to how the past week has gone.

The Beginning

In this chapter, they talk about the main ingredients of getting and being healthy, eating and exercising. Not even remotely a surprise there. What you put into your body encompasses more than your diet (pg. 38).  And this is something I have “known” for a long time, the struggle is taking this wisdom to heart and putting it to work in our lives.

This post and the weeks to follow are all part of this reboot that I am doing in my life to get my health, myself, and my life where I want it to be.  I know I have said it before, but it is worth saying it again.  It is a process, it is slow slicing success and a day by day process to see the results I desire.

Medicine, Gluten, and Packaged Food

Most of the time I do not do any kind of medicine.  I have in the past done allergy relief medicine when my allergies have gotten out of hand; nowadays I don’t do any form of medicine.  I try as much as possible to go natural, not as a nudist, but in medicine.  I will do essential oils for certain ailments, peppermint and fluids for a headache, and will do as many natural remedies as I can for any health issues.  It’s not that I don’t trust doctors, at times I do, seeing what has happened with the health of relatives and friends as they are prescribed pills upon pills.

The rage right now is gluten free eating and living.  Even in the book they discuss living a gluten free life. Both of the authors live a pescatarian lifestyle of eating, which means vegetarians who eat fish.  I don’t know about you but, I enjoy chicken, turkey, the occasional red meat too much to forgo it all.  I am not going to talk about a Paleo lifestyle since I have written about it several times.  Although, it is an option which to discover and see if it is a eating change that would work for you.

Lastly, processed and packaged food.  We all know what these are, its the middle of the grocery store, all of the bagged and packaged things.  Several bloggers that I read and follow have talked about the one way to grocery shop is to follow the outside of the store and completely avoid the interior aisles.  Now of course there are a few good things in the interior, frozen vegetables, protein bars, teas and some of your gluten free goods.  However, the healthiest options for you are on the outer aisles and circumference of the store.

Exercise Habits

Something I realized this afternoon once again, is that we don’t need to set aside hours of our day to get the workout in. Often times we think, “Oh I need to workout today.”  And we dread the thought because, at least in my mind, it means I have to set aside several hours to do it.  In reality, all I need is 30 mins.  Either broken up throughout the day, or all at one point.  I am pretty sure that any of us can find a mere half hour to get the exercise in and begin to see a slow, but steady transformation.

Most of the time, if not all of the time, our “limits” are all in our minds.  We can do this, we can make the changes necessary and become the people, the men and women, we desire to become.  It takes dedication, effort, and persistence.  We just need to get up and give in to those desires and go out there and commit to making a change.

Go out and feel the burn today nerds.  Leave a comment, question, response.  Would love to hear from you!

Munching like Pac-Man

You have picked back up working out and getting healthy just in time for that summer trip, working towards that sexy summer body.  Yet there is something holding you back and you can’t seem to figure out what that could possibly be. Answer= You are eating like Pac-Man.

You are being inhibited by your own desire to eat.  This can mean one of three things:

  • You are Hungry
  • Your emotional state is triggering your “need” to eat
  • You have a mental issue that is connected to eating

Firstly, if you think that you are hungry, try drinking a glass of water to start and wait five minutes to see if that solves the issue.  If after five minutes, you still find yourself hungry or even itching for something sweet, go for an apple.  Not only are you satisfying that desire to eat but you are getting something healthy into your system and scratching that sweet tooth with natural sugars. Also think, “When was the last time I ate?”  If it has been between 6-8 hours since your last meal, you should probably eat, unless you are doing intermittent fasting. (Nerd Fitness FTW)

Secondly, when you find yourself hungry and water hasn’t solved the issue and you really want to pull a chair into the pantry and consume everything in there; stop and evaluate that desire.

Thirdly, it could be a mental issue.  It could be a deep seated mental state that has caused eating to be associated with a traumatic experience in your past.  This isn’t something that can be easily shaken off or stabbed.  Unfortunately, this is something that requires professional help through a counselor, therapist or the like.

Granted there could be several other reasons for your desire to be an all consuming Pac-Man, however I am going to focus on the emotional state in this post.

This is something that is my issue, wanting to plop down in the pantry and munch away on everything in arms reach.  Now being 6 foot tall, that is everything.  As you are eating, look behind you and see what is chasing you, those proverbial ghosts that could be following you.  Fear, anger, depression, dissatisfaction etc.  You may have to eat that power up and chase those ghosts down and eat them in return.

You could be wrestling with a Sandworm and maybe need to do something to shake it off.  Stop and think about what you are feeling or experiencing that is triggering the desire to eat and eat.  It could be as easy as being bored or feeling lonely.  Once you recognize the worm following you, do something about it.  Don’t resort to grabbing that chair and opening that box of cereal and munching away.  Call a friend to go have coffee or go for a walk.  Do that workout you have been putting off all day, fold those clothes in the laundry basket, clean the living room or office etc.  Do something to overcome that emotion that is telling you to eat.

Most, if not all of the time it is boredom and loneliness that are my triggers to stuff my face and mainly it is late at night.  I need to constantly remind myself that when I am feeling this way to go to bed, not to keep watching boring late night tv that is prolonging my boredom; but to bite that bullet and shuffle off to dreamland.

This constant state of evaluating my desire to eat and then taking action is a process, not something that will happen magically overnight.  Although we all wish it could, sadly life doesn’t work in that fashion.

What is your biggest struggle in watching what you eat, or eating right?  I would love to hear your feedback.  And don’t forget to like, comment and subscribe for future blogs releasing every week.  Go out and eat the right things today Nerds and Nerdettes!

Pacman

Igor, flip the switch!!

Young Frankenstein, a great movie and an instant classic.

“Roll, roll, roll in ze hay!!”  “Put ze candle back!”

Sorry I could quote the movie all day, but that won’t complete this post or even make it effective.  What does young frankenstein have to do with this post…nothing! I decided on the title while pondering what I was going to write today.  And that is triggers and switches that get us going or cause us to fail.  My biggest trigger for failure is food and/or comparing myself to others. Not to mention that it is REALLY easy for me to give up and not care. But I am praying and hoping that after today things are/will be permanently different.  I was reading today’s email from my favorite entrepreneur Dani Johnson about 9/11 (12 years ago today) and how when things get bad that they could always get worse.  And I thought about 9/11 and then my mind flashed to the movie Red Dawn where North Korea invades the west coast and that inner voice asked “What would you do if the enemy invaded America?”

Wow, what?!  What would I truly do?  In my  current state I would easily be killed.  I would be captured and put into a pen with the rest of us who didn’t follow rule #1 of Zombieland “Cardio!”  Kidding, but that would mostly be the reason for my failure; lack of dedication, pour health and no physical skills.  And finally, my lovely state of Colorado decided to descend into fall temperatures and rain and I think, finally, hopefully, that switch, that trigger was flicked.  I need to change who I am, I know I have said this DOZENS of times, but if our country were really to be invaded by North Korea or some other enemy country would I be able to survive?  If we transcended into a post-apocalyptic world would i live past a week?  And the true answer, by myself is “Haha Sucker!” If I got together with adventurous, outdoorsy people it would be longer, but not enough.  So something has got to change and that has to be with the skills I have, or lack thereof.

It didn’t help that in my church I am one of four people capable of dancing in our production of Fiddler on the Roof which means I get to do the Russian Dance. (take a couple minutes and see for yourself what I have to learn to do) And in my current physical strength and weight most of this dance and the other dances are going to be physically impossible for me.  So that was another switch that went off, that I have to change, I have no choice, that i have to be able to perform the dances for the show and not to mention I am a perfectionist haha!

It was one of my goals to become proficient at archery this year, and when my ‘sister’ comes home from South Korea we are planning on taking archery lessons.  And then I can put the skills of Alec Lightwood in Archery (minus the gay part no offense anyone) into my bag and move onto knife skills, sword skills, gun lessons and as I get to my goal weight, Parkour (SO AMAZING!!).   Maybe I should just become a Shadowhunter Assassin?! Either way it is time to become a person who is capable of surviving if we were invaded or our country were to collapse.  And I need to remind myself, continually, that it is going to be a day by day thing and no matter how much I wish, hope and pray that it is never going to be instanteous results.  I am going to have to work hard at it and daily and diligently!  And eventually I will become that Parkour, bow & arrow wielding, Shadowhunter Assassin!

Ask yourself this question, if we were to be invaded by North Korea and had to fight for survival, would you survive? I would love to hear your comments and thoughts on this question!

Mmm…Carbs!

It has been nearly a month since I have posted anything, it doesn’t even seem that long, however the date does not lie.  The past few weeks have been really hard for me, I haven’t worked out, I have eaten like carbs are going out of style and since then I have put on ten pounds.  Or just finally stepped on a scale that actually works and maybe I haven’t actually lost as much weight as I originally thought.  Either way the truth is that I have failed.

And upon this failure I have come to the realization that carbs are going to be the hardest thing for me to eliminate.  I go without carbs and I realize my body craves them, the sugar and sweets not so much it seems but the carbs…good lawrdy!

And that above is totally the truth, besides the 200 crunches (like I said before I haven’t worked out in three weeks).  My mindset is completely off, I keep telling myself “Oh I can begin tomorrow, Buffalo Wild Wings is okay today but not after this.  Eating that Spicy Chicken Sandwich from Chick-fil-a isn’t that bad.” etc etc etc etc. (Chick-fil-a is the devil, I don’t think I could ever get enough of it…)  However, here is the thing, I need to go completely Paleo,  I need to get my eating habits and lifestyle change in check and on track. After all that was the reason for starting this blog right?  To talk about my lifestyle change and get support from the interwebs to motivate me to continue to progress towards my weight loss goals?

Not to mention that I blurted out “Yes” when asked by one of my managers at work if I wanted to join their Biggest Loser….I said yes to what?  And to top it off it is $50 I said yes to give over for the competition, and the winner gets the complete collection of ‘entrance fees’.  I don’t have $50 to spend on a competition and my mindset is that it’s just fifty dollars and who cares if I lose it to a stupid competition.  That is the complete wrong mindset to have.  I need to be totally motivated to win so I don’t have to eat that money, alas this morning I tried to workout with a body weight routine and I Sucked, I mean it was atrocious, like royally!  I don’t know how to do this, I have read so much and I think I know but when it truly comes down to stepping up to the plate and going for it, I choke!

In reality I desperately choose the body I have wanted for years!  I need too, I have too.  To gain 10 lbs because I chose to eat like crap is unacceptable and things have got to change around here.  I need to alter and modify my mindset and attitude to drive me towards winning the competition and eliminating carbs.  To finally seeing those abs and muscles that have been buried for 27 years under layers of fat, stored energy and growing cholesterol.  So I have 10 weeks to try to lose as much weight as possible, that means I have to be ultra dedicated to losing weight, eating paleo and working out.  I have to push myself to succeed and I need your help cause God knows I am my own worst motivator.  After stepping on the scale at work I currently weigh as of 7/1/2013, 274 lbs.  10 weeks to lose as much as possible, time for hardcore workout time and driving myself closer to completing an epic quest goal by December.  That means I have to quest goals to accomplish by the end of the Year, guess I better get cracking huh?!

Droids? What Droids?!

Our biggest setback when getting into shape or progressing forward with our dreams is Mindset.  We tell ourselves that just one more cookie and then we will stop, I can sleep another half-hour and then I will get up to work out etc.  We all have said these things to ourselves whether in relation to doing homework, working out, eating or whatever, we are our own worst motivators.  With a snap of our fingers we can convince ourselves to eat that bag of oreos or watch another episode on Netflix and before we know it the bag is empty or 5 hours have gone by and we are ready for the next season.

I am extremely guilty of this, I confess, I did it just this morning.  Instead of getting up at 7:30 like I originally planned, I slept till I had to get up to take a shower before my schedule for the day started.  However, to make up for it I worked out after lunch, when I came home from my meeting. Today doing my circuit was easier than on monday, I even pushed myself a little farther.  I skipped Wednesday because of the excuse that I didn’t want to and actually I was still extremely sore from Monday.  But it is amazing how you feel after a good workout, I actually laid there on the floor for a few and grinned because I pushed myself a bit farther than Monday.  That “buzz” you get, (aka adrenaline) from exercising is way better than from food, drugs, cigarettes etc plus you are getting yourself healthier and more fit every time you do it.

I would consider that a Win-Win situation!  Wouldn’t you?

Our Mindset, or Willpower or motivation is all a mental process.  Instead of saying “I can’t” or “Maybe Later,” just get up and DO IT NOW! Get it over with, so to speak, and just go through your workout circuit.  I mean it, put the laptop down, or the smartphone, step away from the computer and go do your workout, NOW!  Then when you are done you can come back and finish reading this!

We play mind games with ourselves so often that we have stopped ourselves before we even thought of getting started.  For me, I have started telling myself that “I don’t eat sweets.”  Or even “I don’t eat cheese.”  You don’t realize how much effort that takes off the mental game when you already tell yourself that you don’t, instead of I can’t because that leaves a weak spot in your armor for you to take the offer later on in the day to consume copious amounts of that substance.  Now don’t use the phrase to not workout, that is just a defeatist mentality and if you really want to see the YOU buried under that excess weight then we cannot think that way.  When it comes to exercising, forgo saying “I can’t” instead say “I don’t skip a workout session.”  See the difference from “I don’t exercise,” to “I don’t skip workouts.”?  Already you have given yourself a bit of a mental umph to go do that circuit or routine and “level up your life.” (as Steve Kamb would say.)

Put your game face on and get out of bed or drop that remote and go for a walk, run up and down the stairs a few times, whatever.  Just tell your mind to shut up, that if you want to achieve your goals, dreams, desires and passions then the mental chess match has to stop and you need to get off your lazy bum and push yourself to succeed.  There is also a spiritual side to the mental battle we fight “cause our battle is not with flesh and blood,” but that is not a topic for here.  If you would like my input on the spiritual mental game then leave me a comment and I will write one on my other blog 😉.  Each day push yourself a little bit more and soon enough you won’t have to fight to do it because you will enjoy how you feel, the way you look and the euphoria afterwards and things will be that much easier.

So Go out and Feel the Burn today Nerds 🙂  My thighs are killing me!
